Dr. Dave Mackzum has earned a reputation as an exceptional crisis management and problem-solving leader. I’ve seen him in situations that could become contentious when supporting students with disabilities and their families. However, his hands-on, compassionate approach sets him apart as a principal who goes beyond expectations to ensure the success of every child. One such example involved a student with an emotional disturbance whose parents came to deeply respect Dr. Mackzum for his unwavering commitment. They had not had good experiences during their son’s IEP meetings with principals at the elementary level. Dr. Mackzum made it a point to attend every IEP meeting for the student, actively engaging in discussions, addressing concerns, and ensuring that staff consistently complied with the IEP. Rather than simply delegating responsibilities, he worked collaboratively with the team to troubleshoot challenges, offering solutions that supported the student, the teachers, and the family involved. His proactive involvement created a sense of trust and partnership that extended beyond the school walls.
This level of dedication was not unique to one family. Dr. Mackzum always prioritized the needs of students with disabilities, building relationships with parents who knew he would always advocate for their children. One parent, in particular, developed such a strong and amicable bond with him that, when their child transitioned to high school, they specifically requested that Dr. Mackzum continue to be part of their son’s IEP meetings. This gesture speaks volumes about the trust and respect he cultivated through his steadfast support and problem-solving skills. To this day, this parent sees me in the community and asks about Dr. Mackzum. The parent shared with me that periodically, he calls Dr. Mackzum to check on him because Dr. Mackzum had such an impact on his son.
Another memorable example of Dr. Mackzum's leadership and dedication to accountability involved a situation where he followed through with a difficult recommendation to expel a student for violating the code of conduct. I was the acting hearing officer and was already familiar with the parent at the time, as she and Dr. Mackzum had previously disagreed on another matter. Given their history, I anticipated tension during the hearing. However, Dr. Mackzum approached the situation with remarkable composure and professionalism.
He calmly explained the circumstances that led to his decision to recommend expulsion, ensuring the parent fully understood the reasoning. He then outlined a thoughtful plan to support the student while he was out of school, including access to educational resources. Moreover, he presented a re-entry process designed to help the student transition smoothly back into school upon completion of the expulsion period. To my surprise, the parent accepted the decision and expressed her gratitude. She praised Dr. Mackzum for his fairness, attention to her son's educational needs during the expulsion, and foresight in planning a structured re-entry to help the student succeed. This situation highlighted Dr. Mackzum's ability to handle difficult conversations with grace and empathy, ensuring accountability while focusing on the student’s long-term success.
Dr. Dave Mackzum's instructional leadership exemplified his commitment to fostering high-quality teaching and learning in his school. When the district introduced a process for conducting instructional rounds, Dr. Mackzum ensured that his administrative staff and teacher teams adhered to the guidelines set by the district’s curriculum team. Instructional rounds were always conducted collaboratively, with a team that typically included the principal, several teachers, and members of the district curriculum staff. Dr. Mackzum’s active involvement set the tone for the importance of this process.
I vividly recall observing Dr. Mackzum during a classroom visit. He walked around the room, attentively using the instructional tool provided by the district to check off strategies being implemented. He also engaged directly with students, asking questions to gain insight into their learning. Before leaving the classroom, he gave the teacher a thumbs-up, a simple yet impactful gesture of encouragement. Once in the hallway, Dr. Mackzum gathered the team to discuss what he had observed and to compare notes, ensuring alignment and collaborative reflection. His approach encouraged open dialogue and professional growth among team members.
I had the privilege of participating in instructional rounds with Dr. Mackzum on several occasions. Each time, he demonstrated consistency and fidelity to the districtwide process. His leadership ensured accountability and fostered a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement among his staff, ultimately benefiting teachers and students.

The time is now to eliminate high stakes state testing tied to district ranking report cards. The resources put towards testing can and should be dedicated to social emotional learning and also hands-on learning experiences that give students transformational life-changing experiences. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community
